Panther
Black and deep purple. Growls and howls, and some vaguely African patterns… a panther eye!
The first ‘part’ is a Flash animation – I originally drew a sketchy ‘thunder cats’ style shiny laser beam but scaled it back to conform to my more geometric 3D, Cinema 4D again as I’m still loving it’s quick results.
Camera Lucida:
Latin "Light Room" as opposed to camera obscura "Dark Room" - so I played with the duality of light and dark while being all together too literal and modelling a camera lens (even though the Camera Lucida device looks nothing like the camera lens I have depicted).

Also had fun using After Effects' Audio Effects to create the ...'soundscape', the source of which is a series of noises from an old SLR... so I'm all over the shop as far as continuity is concerned.
The site that's on my business card: www.matthewood.co.uk
That's 'Matthew' and 'Wood' with some frugal overlap - unfortunately the internet saw me cutting corners and has justly punished me by forcing me to include the three 'w's for 'world', 'wide' and 'web' if I type it into and address bar. This is the least piggish of my internet presence piggy backing since I have my own URL, however I did it through google sites so I can't actually do much more than bully the design wizard until it cries and develops a twitch, by which I mean: lets me upload a header.
Blogs that site links to:

http://matthew-wood-vfx.blogspot.com/

A new blog dedicated to Visual Effects (of the digital variety) as well as including any and all work I do in my third year at university.

http://matthew-wood-dev.blogspot.com/

A blog that will likely suffer from neglect and may well be stapled onto the end of the VFX blog (so thats 'neglect' and abuse really)

this one what you is on.

It's a little be more yellow than all the others, its called 'animation' but really it's full of pretty poor sketches and stuff (but you know that, you're sitting right on it)
The website site also links to my vimeo profile

http://vimeo.com/matthewwood

So I'm spreading myself a little too thin and intend to try and include some sort of blog aggregation (even though I'm sure your blog aggregator is doing a fine job of feeding you bits and pieces as they float to the surface). I'll go and see if google sites can handle that.

A blog inside a blog blogosphere - I just blew your blog... I mean mind.

(oh my gosh! not even a doodle to accompany all that text, sorry, if I have some time I'll append this with oodles of doodles)Matthew Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12206233304578223016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6077354886269332726.post-64528052775855122882011-03-06T17:23:00.000-08:002011-03-06T17:23:23.326-08:00Web Design.Got a log in your bonnet? (b-log that is!).

It's been a while since I did any web design, so it’s been fun to customise my blogs, I say ‘customise’ since you’re really just working around an existing structure in a very primitive development area, it’s like solving a rubix cube with four foot long chopsticks (four-foot long, not four foot-long). If anybody knows of a way to code for blogger outside of blogger I’d appreciate a note.
My latest blog designing has been for my (slightly less) latest project. An animation for the Resuscitation Council UK. My banner says it all:

I'll remove the black if I win (yep, I'm holding good design for ransom)

I’m still in the pitching phase since several ideas are being carried forward from the initial pitch but I’m confident mine will be developed further, not in its current form but I’ll be putting in the man hours this week, expect some posts. In the mean time you can check it out here:

This is from a small game project (2008) for which I developed some character designs based on rough outlines of individuals working separately, the idea was to bring all the designs together and construct a story and world for them all to exist within, we ended up putting them on a boat full of toxic waste, which enabled us to have a rag tag crew (since the character were quite disparate) and then mutate them to accommodate the more radical characters (the giant "Mindless Killing Thing' (MKT) being one of them). The night before the deadline we realized we needed an intro clip for the DVD; so I wiped this up.

I lost the original images so this is just a record of the character designs, which is the only reason I’m putting them up since the motion design is terrible, though I blame my old computer at the time which never could playback at full frame rate no matter what I did.

I like the captain (he was my character) and the stereo typed kangaroo is pretty fun, and it's nice to see that I've always liked this mustard colour.

I might post some old animations up here as a bit of an archive so that I can do a bit of spring harddrive cleaning, just as soon and the weather resembles anything like spring! So expect more below par work with the excuse 'I did it when I was young'.

In other news, you may recall the image I posted a while back in which I showed a character I was rigging. Well we finished* the animation and handed it in (it was an assignment for university) along with a lovely production bible and DVD cases.

* the animation was in fact not finished, so I'm here to announce the actual start of production. Thanks to an assessment period and an inter-term break we now have almost a month off and intend to finish 'PAINT' before...some time before we go back to university proper.

In other other news: I intend to upload a sketch a day until I return to university proper. If I miss a day I'll upload two the next and so on ...expect a post with 30 sketches in it in about a month.

You stay shot from a good angle blogosphere,
I mean 'card' (not socks). Scared into action by this here guardian article; I have designed a logo and started on a business card. Actually it's part of a professional practice module but the article helped to spur me on since I was wondering if the old card was a bit tired - sure it gives you a chance to prove your design skills while providing valuable contact information, but is it really effective in getting you work? The answer is a resounding- "so what?" - for a small investment you increase your chances of being contacted and with consistent branding make sure you're remembered. I think it's likely worth it even if it simply serves to let your potential future employer know they're on the right website when the logos match the card in their hand (clutched to their job giving bosom if you’ve designed it right?)

Get it? the 'M' becomes a 'W' upside down (maybe even inside out?). The problem I’ve got is that it looks far too sterile and frankly…too much like a logo, by which I mean like a corporate logo – something designed, not a visual representation of who and what I am – but what would be? A stonking great mug shot with a list of services? That’s not what you put on a business card! (it’s more the kind of thing you’d expect to see pinned to the wall inside a lonely phone box) – I’m probably going to hand draw the logo for a more personal feel – might sketch out the font as well. See it soon and exclusively on this blog!

At the end of the day – no one wants to have to commit a spate of gruesome murders just because they have a ‘bone’ coloured business card. (did I miss the point of that book/film?)

The culture show featured the Johnny Cash Project, I gave it a go.
You may pick a frame of the video for ‘Ain’t No Grave’ (or choose one of three a randomly generated frames) and ‘paint’ a portrait of the man, ideally representing what Johnny Cash means to you, personally I’m not a devoted fan so my frame was rather dry but there’s some interesting one’s already up there.

The site has this to say:

“Strung together and played in sequence over the song, the portraits will create a moving, ever evolving homage to this beloved musical icon. [-]

The Johnny Cash Project is a visual testament to how the Man in Black lives on – not just through his vast musical legacy, but in the hearts and minds of all of us around the world he has touched with his talent, his passion, and his indomitable spirit.”
Data visualiser Aaron Koblin and producer Rick Rubin are credited.
Have a go. As per usual it's user voted so I'd suggest lolcatz versions of Cash with celebrities in the background, though there are several rather nifty features so do have a gander if you have the time.

Walk the line blogosphere,

Longer version: At the start of the academic year I vowed to take full advantage of my free bus pass (valued at £200-£250) but after a week of watching the jam packed busses sail past (because I live next to a Venetian conserve transportation route?...no) I decided to get a bike – something sensible, second hand and cheap – so after ignoring all but one of those criteria and purchasing my rickety 1960s racing bike for £160 I set off and realised I could get there faster than the bus if I wanted to – I didn’t come off once despite getting my wheels trapped in slippery tram tracks on more than one occasions and any number of attempts on my life by hate filled passing motorists - it was all going wonderfully well until the 14th of November was a little bit frosty and my bike, tired of it constant verticality, chose to embrace the frosty ground in most shameless a fashion. So after assuring passers-by that I was fine and straightening some of my bike out I resumed my ride to uni.
This is the inaugural post of my flagship blog, just testing the water (the greasy surface of which I have broken once before in the form of a collection of internet items of interest (which in hindsight would have been a much better name that what I came up with) Matt’s Mellifluous Menagerie, I will try to continue posting there since this blog is intended as a portfolio/archive of my personal work rather than a collection of everything I like - since, like all good artists, I'm unlikely to be happy with anything posted here so I wouldn't expect much cross-blog-pollination (inter-blog-lovin'?)

You stay beautiful blogosphere,
